What to do after an accident.
Safety comes first. Once the immediate situation is under control, a few practical steps can make the repair, transport and claim process easier.
1. Make the scene safe
If anyone is injured or there is an immediate danger, contact emergency services. Move to a safe location where possible and follow applicable road-safety requirements.
2. Record useful information
Keep the date, time and location, vehicle registrations, driver and insurer details if available, witness details, and photographs of the vehicles and scene where safe to do so.
3. Understand whether the car is driveable
If you are uncertain whether the vehicle is safe to drive, do not assume that it is. Arrange appropriate assistance.
4. Think about repairs and transport
Consider where the vehicle will be assessed or repaired and whether you will need transport while it is unavailable.
5. Ask for help if the process is unclear
You do not need to know every answer before contacting Back On The Road. Tell us what you know and identify anything you are unsure about.
