What to Do After a Car Accident: A Practical Checklist

After a collision, the first priority is safety. Once the immediate risk is under control, a simple checklist can make the repair, transport and claim process easier to manage.

1. Check for injuries and immediate danger

If anyone is injured or the scene is unsafe, contact emergency services. Move to a safer position where possible and follow applicable road-safety requirements.

2. Record the key details

Keep the accident date, time and location, vehicle registrations, driver and insurer details if available, witness information and photographs where it is safe to take them.

3. Work out whether the vehicle is safe to drive

If you are uncertain, do not assume that the car is roadworthy. Arrange appropriate assistance before moving it.

4. Think about repairs and replacement transport

If your vehicle will be unavailable, consider where it will be assessed or repaired and whether you need alternative transport in the meantime.
